Drishyam

Jeethu Joseph’s directorial venture Drishyam is about Georgekutty (Mohanlal) and his sweet little family comprising of wife Rani (Meena), elder daughter Anju and younger one Anu. It is about their life, struggle, and love. The story takes its shape when an unwelcomed guest knocks their home and an unexpected event turns their lives upside down. It is also about the power of togetherness and family. It is also about how selfish love can turn a person into.

Georgekutty is an orphan whose life revolves around his wife, daughters and movies. He is a cable TV operator and he is a movie addict. He is so obsessed about movies that he tries infusing movie scenes into real life. Although he is a 4th standard dropout, he has a sharp intellect and he is a keen observer. Mohanlal as Georgekutty is effortless. His transition from a miserly yet loving/caring parent/spouse, to a concerned yet determined father is phenomenal.

Rani is a house-wife. She weaves her world within the constraints of her house. She is a 10th standard fail, however, she keeps world affairs in fingertip. Meena shines in that role. Her body language and physique add to the character’s realism.

Ansiba Hassan as Anju and Esther as Anu lingers in our memories even after the movie is over. Especially, Esther I would say. She is sweet and yet strong at the same time. Asha Sarath as IG Geetha Prabhakar is menacing and concerned at the same time. Siddique as Prabhakar gives a subdued performance. All other characters like Sahadevan, Sulaimmanikka, Rani’s parents, Varun and many others pushes the story towards the climax.

However, the real hero is the script. Its sheer brilliance gives several light moments in the first half and makes the audience sit on the edge of the seat during the second half. The narrative is swift and crisp. Editing is done smartly. I loved the suspense elements maintained in the film. The dialogs are apt and the background score blends with the script. But, I really wish that the songs were better. (The only negative I find in this stupendous movie)

In short, Drishyam is a movie that will let you think, nod and admire. It is a treat for any movie buff.  This holiday season, there is another movie that you can enjoy with your loved ones and thereby, feel the power of family.

Enjoy the Drishyam!
