My Thoughts
Let’s face it - Movies emotionally affect us. They make us laugh, cry, happy and sad. However, they are short-lived. But Ram Madhvani’s Neerja gives us a heartache that refuses to subside. It hits us with a wave of grief and makes us wonder if we would have been half as brave as Neerja Bhanot in a difficult situation like the one she was in.

The art director has effectively recreated the PAN-AM flight. The director has wonderfully conveyed the varied emotions that the passengers as well as the crew underwent during the hijack. The helplessness and the suffocation of people is well-established. The editing is crisp and the choice of each actor to play the roles is perfect. The cinematographer has maintained the realistic tone for the film. The background music speaks the minds of characters. The song “Jeete Hai Chal” brings tears to our eyes. The narrative shuttles between present and future, correlating events and crystallizing the thoughts of Neerja, without being cumbersome. Most of the dialogs stays in our heart. I doubt if I can ever forget, “Zindigi lambi nahi badi honi chaahiye”. The movie strikes a chord with the audience because it shows both the personal and professional life of Neerja – her bad marriage, supportive family, caring friends and a bunch of passengers who trust their head attendant.

Sonam Kapoor has lived as Neerja. She portrays both fearlessness and the determination convincingly. She has given her best for this once in a lifetime opportunity. Shabana Azmi as Rama Bhanot, Neerja’s mother steals the show in the climax. She showcases the pride of being a mother of a brave child and the distress of losing her dear daughter.

In short, Neerja is a heart-wrenching tribute to a hero who depicted high level of professional commitment and humanitarian quality. Let’s shed some tears for such a Braveheart.
