My Thoughts
The movie opens with a montage of police officers on duty. It shows their emotional side through the frame of their professional life. A police man who is on duty on a Diwali sees a little girl bursting crackers and his thoughts drift to his daughter. Another police sees a boy stealing guava; instead of asking about it or accusing him, he buys him a bag of guava. The boy changes his mind. Sethupathi is a tribute to the cops; a salute to their bravery. They are shown as bold and tough; their emotional side is exploited too.

Then, Vijay Sethupathi is introduced as an angry man, twirling his moustache – wait! He is not fighting with any villain; playing police-thief with his son! Such is the freshness of S. U. Arun Kumar’s Sethupathi. Of course, there is the usual conflict between the good cop, Sethupathi (Vijay Sethupathi) and the treacherous Vathiyar (Vela Ramamoorthy). There are murders and the mysteries around it. But, Sethupathi wins because of its subtlety and the emotional quotient.

The story is about solving the murder of a fellow police officer and the movie is all about the hurdles that Sethupathi faces during the course of investigation. His smart moves and dedication would surely make you hoot. The narrative is free-flowing and Sreekar Parsad’s editing makes the film a fast paced one. Music director Nivas K. Prasanna (Remember Vinmeen Vithaiyil from Thegidi film?) has given a brilliant background, energetic at times and subtle some times. The sweetness of Konji Pesida Venaam would linger around.

Vijay Sethupathi as the honest, dedicated and smart police officer perfectly fits into the role. He looks fit and his body language matches that of a cop. His love for his family and the dilemma he goes through on knowing that he had accidentally shot a boy are well-emoted. He is one gifted and versatile actor!

Remya Nambeesan as the caring wife of Sethupathi and a mother of two children displays matured and effortless acting. It takes a great courage to come across as a mother; Remya not only displays that courage, but also proves that she is one finest actors. It is sad that she is underrated.

The chemistry between Remya and Vijay Sethupathi is crackling (Like what we saw in Pizza). The child artists (I don’t know their name) are also good. Especially, the little boy. There is a scene in which he leaves us spellbound (I don’t want to explain that scene and be a spoiler!).

As an ardent movie follower, I am sad that I didn’t know that such a fine movie was not promoted well and that efforts were not made to take it to the larger audience. I wish the producers at least leveraged with the niche that Vijay Sethupathi has created for himself.

Anyways, this is an awesome movie - a cop movie of course, but with a humanitarian angle. A breather from Sigham, Osthi, Samy and all that!  Go for it!

  4. I too heard good about this movie, and you reviewed it well, as usually covering every aspect of the movie! But I missed watching this movie in theater as I went to Miruthan instead. Ramya is a nice actress and I liked her acting in Kulla nari kootam.
