My Thoughts

Ae Dil Hai Mushkil directed by Karan Johar is about friendship and unrequited love. It is a kind of movie that affects you, tears you apart and makes you weep inconsolably. The first half is full-filled; around intermission it inflicts heartache. The second half leads you to a vacuum and forces you to let go and come out of it. The emotions are so well conveyed that as audience, we are enveloped with the similar agony as Ayan’s (Ranbir Kapoor). The movie is a giant leap from Johar’s debut film Kuch Kuch Hota Hai which made a generation believe that a boy and girl cannot be friends (I know that original idea is from Sooraj Barjatya’s Maine Pyar Kiya).  Ae Dil Hai Mushkil explores the thin line between love and friendship and the different shades of love.

Being a Johar film, the characters are rich, well-dressed, look enviably beautiful and have a weird sense of humor. The locations are exotic and classy. The situations are often funny; else heart wrenching. Songs are catchy and choreography is brilliant. The intensity of emotions is high and so is the impression it creates. However, the movie often reminded me of Kal Ho Na Ho and Rockstar.  

Rabir Kapoor lives as Ayan, mostly because he has done similar characters before – child-like, rich and confused. His eyes speaks volumes, conveying the unsaid. Anushka Sharma as Alizeh has delivered her best to justify her character that is practical yet emotional. She looks nice and her clothes are so wearable. Aiswarya Rai Bachchan looks mesmerizingly beautiful. Her deep eyes often conveys the struggle of Saba – the emotional struggle to stay away from another relationship mesh. Fawad Khan as DJ Ali has stellar looks and forms the crux of the story; however, he has limited screen time. And, the show stealer is Shahrukh Khan who appears for a few minutes in a cameo. His words echoes his pain and eyes reflects his helplessness. He makes us weep and makes us realize why he is worshipped as the epitome of romance and is affectionately called as the king of bollywood.

In short, Ae Dil Hai Mushkil celebrates unrequited love like never before though the second half seemed a little dragging; never ending.

Be ready to cry and feel heart broken.

But, don’t miss this one.
