Cleaning Therapy

Cleaning as an activity is seen as a chore by some, form of therapy by some and an integral part of one's personality by some. Well, I am not going to write a about who is right and who is not. Instead, I would like to write about the impact of this activity called cleaning. Personally, I get influenced by the space around me. If it's uncluttered and appealing, I feel calm and positive. If it's messy and unorganised, I feel restless and irritated. To give an example, a lush plant or a nice flower brings instant joy. But a withered plant doesn't bring that joy or rather it evokes no specific emotion or thought. On that note, here are a few things that cleaning as an activity brings to the table.

1. Sense of accomplishment
Imagine the wardrobe is unorganised. Or the kitchen slab is crying to be scrubbed. Or as simple as your laptop has accumulated dirt. When you organise that wardrobe or scrub that kitchen slab or wipe your laptop nicely, it looks way better than they did earlier, right? That gives a sense of accomplishment, the joy of simply completing an activity. How about starting the day by making the bed? You have already done one task successfully - what a wonderful way to kick start a new day! It gives a confidence that you could do anything through the day. You are simply capable of doing everything.

2. Sense of control
In our lives, many things could be controlled and directed in the way we want, such as driving a vehicle. But then there are things that are beyond our control. Having controllable elements make us feel good and the uncontrollable make us feel lost. When things are tidy and organised, when things have a place and are placed at its place, we seem to find them easily. It gives a sense of having control over things and the space we live in. Awesome, isn't it?

3. Sense of having a habit
Believe it or not, we humans are a creature of habits. It brings discipline and a sense of accomplishment as well as control. Cleaning as an activity when done regularly becomes a habit. Having a good habit is truly rewarding. And this habit in turn is going to make your space clean and organised. In no time, it becomes a part of your personality. Thereafter, the mind learns to remain calm and the brain learns to have more fruitful thoughts.

4. Sense of happiness
Yes, cleaning as an activity brings happiness. Why because, it carries the three awesome things we discussed above. This helps the body to release happy hormones called endorphins. Other ways to get this hormones is through exercise, dancing, meditation, etc. In fact, cleaning therapy is recommended to people struggling with stress, anxiety and depression.

So what are you ou waiting for? Clean the mind, unclutter your thoughts, scrub the anxiety, wipe away the fears... Just dazzle!!!!
