Tanjai Periya Kovil - Brihadeeswarar Temple

As a part of my Kumbakonam trip, I visited Tanjavur as well. I was excited to go to the famous Brihadeeswarar kovil. It is also called Tanjao Periya Kovil (Big Temple). When I saw the temple myself, I was awestruck. Everything about the temple is majestic. The Shiva Lingam is magnanimous and the Nandhi is equally huge. All other idols are life-sized and I knew that I was witnessing something that shows human excellence.

The Nandi carved out of a single rock… about 16 feet long and 13 feet high.

Built by emperor Raja Raja Chola I and completed in 1010. It turned 1000 years old in 2010.

It is one of the largest temples in India.

The Kumbam of the temple is carved out of a single rock.
It is said that the shadow of the gopuram never falls on the ground; during any time of the day!

PS: If you are planning a trip to Kumbakonam, Murugan Residency (I stayed here) and Sitthi Residency (Opposite to Murugan Residency) can be a really good option to stay. Do not miss the famous Kumbakonam Degree coffee… And for travel, if you are looking for a good taxi service, you can contact Shankar - 9524724442.
