Precisely three days before i got to know about this book through Instagram. I instantly loved the title and simplicity yet intriguing cover. The review only added to my curiosity. I picked the book up and i read. And read. Oh no! I am sorry, i lived. Amongst the Maranians in Maran somewhere in Armenia.
.
This is book is so heartwarming that it makes you shed tears of hope and joy. I strongly believe that we will get evrything we want/wish/dream. All we need to do meanwhile is hope and believe. This book reaffirmed that philosophy.
.
The descriptive narrative takes us to the Maran village, right into the homes and hearts of their residents. It provides their detailed ancestral background and the story behind each of their surnames. They have faced the great famine, earthquake, snowstorm, world war, deaths of their loved ones and the misery of old-age. Yet they carry a shared spirit of zeal. They may not be hopeful when the story begins. But their acceptance of the situation and the camaraderie brings a ray of hope in the end. This book is a celebration of human spirit which is contagious to say the least
.
As i read, i strongly felt that the author has written from heart. Because it connects with us and pulls the right strings. The story begins with Anatolia preparing to welcome death and how one event leads to another that she is given with the gift of life (pun intended!)
.
At 251 pages, it's an assured page turner. Soothing. It gives a glimpse of their cultures and food they eat. It gives a detailed sneak peek into lives of several characters without confusing or overburdening. I was glued to the book and highly recommend this gem of a book. It's exactly what we need during uncertain or disheartening time
